Issue 19 - The Editors Speak
Not sure how many of us thought we’d be Foyle less and bottom half of the table as we entered October.
But that’s the reality.
If we don’t sort it out soon, we could be a lot worse off. That’s the future as rumours of financial woes have surfaced again.
I find it hard to believe we’re struggling financially after the sales of Brodie, Woolford and Boyes in the last 2 years, plus 2 Wembley appearances and a good FA Cup run, which alone was reported to have netted us £150,000.
If we’re struggling for money after all that lot, imagine where we’d be without it.
As new clubs come into the Conference, bringing new found wealth (think Newport, think Fleetwood), its only going to get harder and harder to gain promotion. And that’s before we consider the new money of Crawley and the rest of the division.
After last season we thought it might be our time this season. But we’re already looking more likely to gain promotion via the play offs than as Champions. That is assuming you think we can climb into the top 5. We also know what a lottery the play offs can be. Neutrals had Luton nailed on to beat us in the semis, its how the teams play well on the day, form goes out of the window.
Our slow start to the season, continued failure to break down defences at home and the lack of a high scoring forward would all suggest the play offs, let alone the title may be out of our reach.
PS And not a mention, so far, of The FA’s reaction to incidents after the Luton game. We had Sheffield Wednesday v Crystal Palace one day, then City’s whole team was forced to take evasive action a day later.
The FA decides to take no action. Just in time for Milwall fans to invade the pitch and physically confront Watford players during the game,. Until The FA does something, incidents such as these will continue to happen. How many more times will the bland excuse, “the home club did all they could do” be rolled out. The FA has it in their powers to disband a club. Harsh yes, but an option for the persistent offenders. In City’s case, we’ll probably lose out by about £15,000 this season due to extra policing imposed on us for our home game with Luton. A couple of punishments spring to mind. Make Luton play one or more home games behind closed doors or make Luton pay to police City’s home game against Luton.
