Issue 20 - The Editors Speak
Spurred on by the first David Bowie new music in 10 years, new frontiers hits the web again after extensive works to upgrade our server infrastructure to cope with the incessant demand.
Never thought that I would see us winning 2 cup finals at Wembley in a week. I even recall Dickie Davies laughing at me many years ago when I said my sporting ambition was to watch York City at Wembley!
I doubt many of us can recall a better season supporting City.
Guess we have back in our rightful place in Division 2 having enjoyed a wonderful 2011/2 season. Some of the football was amongst the best I have ever seen watching City.
Possibly consistently the most pleasing on the eye and as the season reached its climax; it seemed that we could take all before us. Witness Luton in March (twice), Mansfield away as we grew in stronger the longer the game went on and then at Wembley. We gradually got on top of Newport and after going behind to Luton we quickly turned it around and although only 2-1 in the end, it was an easy 2-1. It was also good to get some national recognition for our style of football.
My fear for this season was soon realised. Our defence couldn’t get away with the same mistakes as in The Conference.
I had hoped that our forwards would see us nearer the top of Division 2. Unfortunately some of our defensive shortcomings have been cruelly exposed in Division 2.
Lee Bullock proved what is often said, do not go back to your first love. I wonder whether Richard Brodie would have worked out if he had returned?
Unfortunately, Gary Mills couldn’t do his summer magic again and so this season our team has shown its age and deficiencies.
It was always a big ask to find players as good as Jason Walker, Matty Blair and Ashley Chambers every summer. Not to mention the likes of Paddy McLaughlin, Jon Challinor or Lanre Oyebanjo.
We have never had such a successful summer recruitment campiagn in our entire history!!!
Unfortunately, his only summer 2012 signing who came anywhere near that quality was Michael Coulson who soon got crocked out and is out for the season.
Events over the past few weeks have proved that Division 2 is not the gold mine we all thought it would be.
First there was the McGills pumping in fifty grand to pay the December wage bill when the Gillingham game was postponed. Since them we’ve seen a massive loss on the balance sheet and no virtually funds available to strengthen the squad in January. It appears we have to release a player in order to bring one in.
Having given The Conference winners a chance to prove themselves, standby for a big clear out this summer.
Personally, I’m not expecting to see a big budget available, so it might well be more of the same.
Let’s hope we can keep the younger, hungrier players whilst adding some more of the quality that which Gary Mills found in 2011. It should be the pick of The Conference (and below) and some youngsters from the bigger clubs.
However, a chilling thought to end on.
Throughout our history, we have spent many seasons in the basement division of The Football League. The 6 seasons, including 2 promotions between 1971 and 1977 and another 6 seasons between 1993 and 1999 represent our longest spell outside the basement division until we fell through the trap door and spent 8 seasons in The Conference.
Survival is the name of the game.
